Brian R. Johansson
President and CEO of Family Guidance Inc.
Brian Johansson joined Family Guidance in July, 2013, after serving The Christian Herald Association and The Bowery Mission in New York City for 20 years. It was there that he progressed from Site Director to Executive Director and most recently as their Vice President of Operations. In addition to managing seven sites in NYC, he oversaw their large camp/retreat center in Bushkill, PA. This camp serves 1100 at- risk children a summer and provides robust year-round programming serving children in NYC with mentoring, Christian school scholarships and a new endeavor to plant missionary couples into the needy neighborhood where the campers live. The camp property also runs a retreat center business in the off season that provides spiritual renewal to over 75 youth groups a season, as well as, revenue to offset the cost of summer camp.
Brian was one of the founding leaders of an outreach called Don’t Walk By in New York City which is in its 5th year running and is a collaborative outreach that utilized nine partner organizations, 1400 volunteers from over 100 churches who walk every block on the island of Manhattan. Over the last 5 years the outreach has engaged over 7000 homeless with hope and options to get off the street. The term Don’t Walk By comes from the parable of the Good Samaritan, who didn’t walk by.
Brian is a pastor’s son, raised in inner-city NYC, where he went to public school and grew to understand frontline ministry. Brian received his BS in Organizational Management from Nyack College and his MPA degree from Marywood University. He currently serves on the Board of Elim Bible College in Lima, NY where he completed a One Year Program in Biblical Studies. Brian and his wife Peggy, have been living at the Bowery Mission facility in Manhattan, but also have maintained a house in Henryville, PA. They found that living with those in need helped them to stay connected to the ministry. Peggy is originally from the Kittanning area, where she still has family, and is very excited about returning to Southwestern PA.
We are very blessed to have Brian joining Family Guidance in the midst of our 50th year of ministry. With Family Guidance poised to build and grow, Brian brings years of construction management experience from the Bowery Mission and his previous career as a project manager for a construction company in NYC. Brian’s heart for and hands-on experience working with vulnerable, hurting and at-risk populations makes him an invaluable leader, God’s perfect choice for Family Guidance for such a time as this.
